Lululemon golf clothes: why the Commission short worked

By Colin LandforcePublished

Lululemon made shorts I wanted to golf in long before it needed to call them golf shorts. The Commission short was my go-to. Nine-inch inseam. Warpstreme fabric. Pretty straightforward.

That was my argument in the October 2023 video: the slander aimed at non-golf brands making golf clothes was getting old. Lululemon had already made a product that worked on the course. Giving it a golf category didn’t suddenly change the shorts.

The Commission short was already doing the job

I’m a nine-inch inseam guy. The Commission short gave me the proportions I wanted, and the Warpstreme material was the detail I kept coming back to. I was wearing it before the golf positioning showed up.

When I look at golf apparel, that’s where I start. The fabric, the fit, the actual piece. A logo having a long history in a pro shop doesn’t tell me whether I want to wear the shorts.

A $98 polo puts “expensive” in context

In most contexts, Lululemon is expensive. In the collection I reviewed, the polo was $98. For a golf polo, I was fine with that.

That was the price in the 2023 video. It’s useful context for the reaction, not a current price or a promise that the same piece is still available.

The golf styling wasn’t the selling point

The nylon ABC golf piece was aggressively white. It was also the only piece I noticed actually styled with golf shoes. I liked a color in the collection. I liked the embossed logo. The hat? Please do not make things weird by wearing that hat.

Those are separate verdicts on separate pieces. Liking the shorts doesn’t require signing off on the entire collection.

Lululemon walked so modern golf apparel could run. The product had been on the course well before the marketing caught up. Watch the original review for the specific collection I was reacting to, or browse the video archive for more golf products and brands.
