Private label beats product development
Consumer electronics is not for the faint of heart. A rangefinder is the exception because you are private labeling somebody else’s technology. Big rangefinder brands in golf do exactly this.
The weak point of a tech product is rarely features. It’s UX. A rangefinder has a simple interface, so the hard part is already solved. Leave the product development to the factory and spend your effort on the brand.
The numbers
Budget rangefinders in golf sell for $200 and up. In my June 2023 rangefinder video I put a private-label unit from Bosean at around $50 to $60 landed, at moderate scale.
I also asked Bosean for MOQs on a completely custom injection-molded body. I want to make a gold cube that happens to be a rangefinder. Terrible idea.
Who Bosean is
Bosean’s main business is gas detection. It runs separate production lines for SMT, gas detectors and laser rangefinders, and also makes altimeters and angle meters. See gas detector manufacturers for that side of the business.
